The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at Washington University in St. Louis focuses on fundamental mechanical engineering and materials science at the interfaces between traditional disciplines:

  • Where mechanics converges with biology
  • Where materials science converges with nanotechnology
  • Where aerospace engineering converges with the science of energy

We believe it is at these interfaces that solutions to many of engineering’s grand challenges may be found.

The department awards a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a Master of Science and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. MEMS faculty also advise PhD students in Materials Science and Engineering through the interdisciplinary Institute for Materials Science and Engineering (IMSE).
